Gung-fu fighter

Since I have written about Gerard’s narrow escape at Padang, Indonesia, on Facebook, I would like to share this article of him at the latest Tatler magazine.

Besides being a very good eye surgeon, Gerard has also helped me in my past charities. Lately, he even posed for Hermes to raise funds and awareness for Beautiful People, a volunteer group which helps mentor disadvantaged teen-aged girls.

These model pix will be printed on postcards for exhibition to help Beautiful People…giving time and effort for a larger purpose – that’s the spirit! (Tatler).

BarroMetrics Views: An Interesting Encounter

My friend, and chief media and events organiser, runs a very active Facebook. She experienced an interesting encounter from a trading wannabe.

Ana received a request from, let’s call him Peter as follows:

“hi Anna, i’m (Peter) here. I see that u are experienced in trading. Do u mind mentoring an intern just starting out?”

Now Ana does no teaching – it’s not her cup of tea. So she writes back and says (in part):

“You can do 2 things:

* Go and read my Amb educational program-Idkit

* When I organize the next Habits of Success seminar for 2010 at SMU, you can register for the course which is run once a year by my mentor Ray Barros.“

Peter replies:

“well i guess if a mentor possessed the real ability he would become rich sooner than he would find it necessary to promote products to the public”.

Don’t you find the whole episode interesting? Where else but in the trading world, would a prospective student approach a possible teacher for free lessons, and when rejected suggests that the potential teacher is a fraud – the implication is she is someone who is ‘rich’ only because of the teaching skills rather than her trading skills.

But let’s put aside the incongruity of the actions of someone who first asks for freebie and when refused mentorship, implies the potential mentor is a fraud. Let’s ask instead if ‘Peter’ had even bothered to do the least due diligence.

Had he Googled Ana, he’d have found that she ran second in a live-trading competition; by ‘live’ I mean with real dollars at risk. Not bad for someone who ‘can’t trade’.

I take time out to recount the tale because one of my life’s ambitions is to make a real difference to the abysmal success stats in our game. When I hear this sort of events, I wonder if it is even possible. If Peter reflects the majority of newbies, then without a doubt, I am on a Don Quixote quest.

With the disclosed attitude, hell would freeze over before ‘Peter’ could become successful over the long-term. And there is nothing in the world I could do to change that.

I find that is a really depressing thought.
