UNIFEM SNOW Benefit, 2 DEC 2009

CONRAD CENTENNIAL HOTEL, SINGAPORE

~ A CulinARY CELEBRATION OF HOPE Featuring The Surreal Chef Bob Blumer ~

On behalf of the National Committee for United Nations Development Fund For Women, Singapore (UNIFEM Singapore), I would like to warmly invite you to participate in the 2009 UNIFEM SNOW Benefit.

UNIFEM is dedicated to supporting the empowerment of women in developing countries. Our programmes are designed to assist women in the region by providing access to education, health, economic independence and a life free of violence and abuse.

Here in Singapore the National Committee for UNIFEM was created in 1999. Over the past decade we have worked tirelessly to raise awareness and create change on issues of critical importance to women through campaigns, talks and film screenings, supported innovative UNIFEM programmes in Aceh, Timor Leste and the Mekong region, and even promoted a unit trust fund that invested in global securities showing a commitment to the empowerment of women. UNIFEM continues to touch the lives of women and girls around the world.

In an effort to raise awareness on ending violence against women, UNIFEM, which provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes fostering women’s empowerment and gender equality, launched the Say No to Oppression of Women campaign (SNOW) in 2005.

The UNIFEM SNOW Benefit is a platform to raise funds for UNIFEM’s various programmes in the region through an evening of sumptuous delicacies, fine wines and exquisite art pieces. The inaugural UNIFEM SNOW (Say No to Oppression of Women) Benefit was held in November 2005. It is now an annual event attracting support from a long list of award winning international chefs, who generously donate their time and talents to support the work of Singapore’s National Committee for UNIFEM Singapore.

Thanks to the support and commitment of our guest chefs and partners, the annual UNIFEM SNOW Benefit series has so far raised more than S$500,000 to support UNIFEM’s efforts to improve the lives of women in need across our region.

This year, we are aiming for yet another successful gastronomic extravaganza to raise funds for the Safe Community Initiative within the UNIFEM Women, Peace and Security in Aceh Programme. Aceh has suffered over 30 years of civil conflict. Tens of thousands of lives have been lost and human rights abuse is widespread across the country. In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami devastated the country and ended the insurgency. Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost, while at least half a million became homeless. The country’s current post conflict transition is fertile ground for Aceh to create a democratic and equal society.

Through the Women, Peace and Security in Aceh programme, UNIFEM’s goal is to bring sustainable governance and peace to a country torn by decades of civil conflict followed by tsunami devastation, through women’s full participation in recovery and peace building. This programme will reach thousands of women at sub-district and village levels through public education, legislation reforms, building & maintenance of women crisis centers in all 23 districts and development of training activities around the centers. In addition special one-stop crisis centers will be built at sub-district hospitals in 6 pilot sites.

A culinary celebration of hope is planned for the evening of Wednesday, 2nd December 2009. This year we are pleased to showcase The Surreal Chef Bob Blumer, a celebrity cookbook author, artist and programme host on The Food Network’s The Surreal Gourmet. Chef Blumer will be presenting his special creation of a 5-course degustation meal and he will also demonstrate his culinary prowess in front of the audience.

Our Venue Sponsor is the Conrad Centennial Hotel and they will be featuring their Chef Ranner & his team to assist Chef Blumer. In addition, a wine for each dish has been specially selected to pair, compliment and enhance the gastronomic experience for the evening.

Besides the fabulous food that awaits you, the evening promises to further indulge your senses with the gastronomic feast accompanied by an Art & Experiences Auction, where unique art pieces and culinary experiences with our celebrity chef may be won.

This year’s UNIFEM SNOW Benefit is limited to 25 tables only. We would be honoured if your company would consider partaking in this meaningful event as a Corporate Table Sponsor.
